Opening Friday January 25th from 6-8pm, spongespace, a solo exhibition with sound design by Stephen Vitiello and wall design by Leah Beeferman. The exhibition will take place at Solvent Space in the Plant Zero arts complex in Richmond VA. Three participatory Sponge workshops, which are free and open to the public, are scheduled. December 2007: Tim Bowring of WRIR radio in Richmond, interviewed me for his show “Zero Hour” about past and present work, and the upcoming spongespace show. File posting coming soon!
November 2007: Mark Dion and Dana Sherwood bunked at “Grace & Strawberry” in Richmond on the first night of their journey for the project Travels of William Bartram -Reconsidered. The project examines the history and culture of 18th century American naturalists, John (1699-1777) and his son William Bartram (1739-1823).
Fall 2007: The Dean's office at the VCU School of the Arts funded a web-based version of Sponge with a Dean's Exploratory Research Grant. To see the first iteration of the site, click here.
Fall 2007: My role as Assistant Professor began at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts. My primary appointment is in the Art Foundation Program and my departmental affiliations are with Craft/Materials Studies, Kinetic Imaging, and Painting & Printmaking.
Summer 2007: I learned to “skirt” sheep fleeces at Spring Hills Farm in Dalton, PA. (Skirting is the practice of removing natural debris and waste from the fleece once it has been removed from the sheep. Skirted fleece can be scoured, carded and spun into yarn.)
June 2007: I completed my Master of Science in Visual Studies degree at MIT. For my thesis work, I received the Jerome B. Wiesner Award and the Harold and Arlene Schnitzer Prize in the Visual Arts.
