Sponge takes up residence at the Anderson Gallery at VCUarts. The space will open officially on August 27th. Goings-on have been percolating since the start of the new year. Details and event postings coming soon to the upcoming Sponge blog.

February 2 2010: Sponge at Reference Gallery for 3.5 with Colablablab and Tricycle Gardens from 7-9PM at 216 E. Main St. in Richmond.

February 6 2010: Feltmaking for Nomads, a Sponge workshop, at Trade School; 139 Norfolk St. NY, NY. (Snowed out!)

February 15-17 2010: A visit to Austin Peay University with Ian Berry and Nina Katchadourian for speaking and workshops in preparation for Ian's spring exhibition, I Am Amen.

January 2010: Colablablab, the first semester-long iteration of Sponge, is underway. Check out the project site here.

January 10-13 2010: A visit to Nova Scotia to speak and give a workshop at NSCAD University. Thanks to Craig Leonard for hosting.

September 24-27 2009: O Brave New World: Looking at Time, Making and Creativity, an invitational symposium at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.

August 14th: Lecture at Mildred's Lane for Retail 21c. Phase II.

July 23rd: Open through August 22nd, Incident Report Viewing Station in Hudson, NY. A Feltmaking mini-Sponge took place at the Hudson Opera House on July 18th.

March 2009: Saratoga Springs, NY this weekend, March 20-22, The YES symposium at the Tang. In conjunction with the Tim Rollins and K.O.S. exhibition; Rollins, Paula Hayes, Oliver Herring, Ben Kinmont, Todd Lippy, Pedro Reyes, Allison Smith and I will be presenting projects that propose optimistic strategies in art and teaching.

January 2009: Sponge returns to MIT for a weeklong IAP event at The Center for Advanced Visual Studies. The signup and poster.

December 2008: Thanks to friends and artists Amy Madden and Christopher Quirk for a snowy retreat in Hudson, NY. Soon they'll come to Richmond for Chris' January 9th opening at 1708 Gallery. And, Amy's gone live with an incredible Etsy site full of prints and crafts.

Fall 2008: Big thanks to Ian Berry, Larissa Harris and J. Morgan Puett for their brilliant contributions to Art Schools Take the Lead: Creating Model Venues for Transdisciplinary Collaboration, a panel at the MACAA 2008 Biennial Conference.

August 2008: One last summer adventure; hiking & swimming at Virginia's spectacular Douthat State Park. Thanks to Richmond's own sustainability guru Lisa Taranto of Tricycle Gardens for the expert tour.

July 2008: Thank you to Volksboutique and friend and proprietor Christine Hill for the inaugural slot in the “Micro-residency”. Berlin, June 29th-July 10th.

July 2008: On July 2nd at 7:30PM, a lecture at the Bauhaus. Hosted by Volksboutique, the esteemed project of the artist Christine Hill.

June 2008: Mildred's Lane & Spring Hills Farm finally meet. Participants in the Mildred's Lane RETAIL21c. session will take a field trip to “the farm”. On Tuesday the 23rd, a lecture about Sponge back at Mildred's Lane.

June 2008: Opening Wednesday June 16th from 6-8PM, Mildred's Lane, a group show at Alexander Gray Associates in NYC. June 18th-September 6th, 2008. Works from Feltmaking will be on view.

May 2008: spongespace images go live at spongespace.net.

May 2008: Back from the grand opening of Mildred's Lane in Beach Lake, Pennsylvania. A new educational institute, museum and historical society founded by Mark Dion and J. Morgan Puett.

Spring 2008: "Spongespace Project Revels in Curiosity", a review of the spongespace show at Solvent Space by VCU's Tom Gresham.

Spring 2008: Wool-Felt Kitchen Sponges, a collaborative project with participants in the spongespace Meta-Sponge workshop was on view at 1708 Gallery in Richmond, Virginia, as part of the show, 3D Multiples: The Object of Production.

Winter 2008: Opening Friday January 25th from 6-8pm, spongespace, a solo exhibition with sound design by Stephen Vitiello and wall design by Leah Beeferman. The exhibition will take place at Solvent Space in the Plant Zero arts complex in Richmond VA. Three participatory Sponge workshops, which are free and open to the public, are scheduled. December 2007: Interview with Tim Bowring of WRIR radio in Richmond, for his show “Zero Hour”. Listen here.

November 2007: Mark Dion and Dana Sherwood bunked at “Grace & Strawberry” in Richmond on the first night of their journey for the project Travels of William Bartram -Reconsidered. The project examines the history and culture of 18th century American naturalists, John (1699-1777) and his son William Bartram (1739-1823).

Fall 2007: Beginning work on a web-based version of Sponge. To see the first iteration of the site, click here.

Fall 2007: Assistant Professor at VCUarts. Primary appointment in the Art Foundation Program and departmental affiliations with Craft/Materials Studies, Kinetic Imaging, and Painting & Printmaking.

Summer 2007: Learned to “skirt” sheep fleeces at Spring Hills Farm in Dalton, PA.
